How to Make Dining Chair Cushions



Dining chair cushions are relatively easy to make a few are even remotely handy with a sewing machine, or sewing by hand. You simply need the right tools for the job, such as, a preselected fabric, a sewing machine or needle, thread, and scissors or a fabric cutter. If you've never seen a fabric cutter, and they are highly recommended over scissors by the way.

You will need around 3 yards of fabric, however the amount of material will depend on the number of cushions you are making. Secondly, you'll need some chair pad foam - the sizing will also depend on how large the cushions will be, however standard chair cushions are roughly 15 inches square.

You want to measure the seating area of your dining chairs for both width and depth, however, a standard dining see as roughly 42 cm square.

Also make sure you have at least 3 cm in length and depth to the fabric that you purchase to give yourself some buffer room, as well as to make this seam. Obviously you'll need to make sure you buy enough fabric for both sides of the cushion - some people actually greatly underestimate the material requirements and catch this during the process of making their cushions.

In order to cut the fabric, simply lay it down on the floor with the inside facing downward so that your fabric doesn't get dirty. Now simply draw out the measurements that you took on the fabric with some fabric chalk. Cut to pieces for each cushion you'll want to make with your scissors or fabric cutter.

Now it's time to sew together your cushions. You'll start by sewing the seams, making sure you leave at least a half inch of fabric from the edge. As you begin, make sure the foam fits nice and snug inside the fabric, and if not, adjust your seams accordingly.

Once you've determined the foam will fit properly once you've finished sewing the material together, continue around the seams until the inside of the pillow is completely covered by the fabric. Now your dining chair cushions are ready for use by guests and family. Enjoy!
